Some Commonly asked Questions.....
What does the word doula mean?
Historically the word doula pertained to the female helper who assisted the labouring woman.  In the 21st century the term refers to an educated woman and trusted birthing companion who provides physical, emotional and informational support to the childbearing woman and her partner
How long does my doula work with me?
After you select your doula she will meet with you during your last trimester.  She then follows you through labour and delivery and  during the early post partum period.
How does my doula support me and if present, my partner also?
Your doula supports you by setting up at least 2 prenatal visits.  During this time she gets to know you and your partner and provides prenatal education on the different paths labour and delivery can sometimes take.  Along with educating and reasurring you, this also helps you to create a realistic birth plan to share with your health care provider and staff. Birth plans insure that your feelings surrounding labour are better communicated and preserved.  During labour she works with you by using massage, positioning and breathing techniques to help you work through contractions.  She assists your partner in his special role with encouragement and by helping to guide him through comfort measures that may be useful to the woman.  Postnatally she can assist with education in breastfeeding and postpartum adjustment issues.

About Carmen
Women have been supporting women in birth since biblical times. This shows the potential impact a doula can bring to birth. I am a certified doula with DONA International and a member of several professional organizations.  During my journey as a professional I have met and have had the honour of working with women during this pivotal moment. I have seen that with proper guidance, relaxation and confidence, women are capable of having a truly satisfying birth, regardless of the route it takes.  I draw on my education, my love as a mother and most of all my hands and heart, to help ensure a more peaceful and empowering experience in the birth journey. Partners, often the forgotten members of the support team feel more nurtured as well so that they feel confident and involved in what is also their personal and very important role.
Beyond doula services, I am also a member of Childbirth International and teach private in home prenatal classes. I also offer breastfeeding assistance and Postpartum Doula Services

Fees

Doula's are dedicated, nurturing professionals. However, there is a fee for doula services. Most doula's provide services with a retainer that guarantees their services to you. The final fee is due within 2 weeks of the birth.
